Written Language Literacy Narrative

WLLN

Growing up in a Hispanic household you typically hear your parents speaking Spanish all the time and with all that time I do not understand much Spanish at all. So, I have grown to learn and understand the English language. For my parents though they struggle to understand the language, especially my mom. 99% of the time my mom would call me to speak to me and she will speak Spanish most of the time, me obviously not knowing how to speak or understand Spanish well I still understood her why because throughout all my years living with her it has just been implanted to my head to understand what she say’s when she speaks Spanish to me. So, whenever she speaks to me, I just know what she is saying. But I would always respond in English because I did not know how to speak Spanish. My mom would understand my English whenever I responded back to her. My mom’s tongue is as natural as it gets. But since my mom’s first language was Spanish, she would have to learn English just like me. See with my mom she understands English but not fully, so from time to time I will have to help read and explain instructions, messages, flyers ETC. It also did not help that my mom had bad eyesight, so reading for her was really a struggle. But to be honest I do not mind helping my mom out when it came to reading out messages, grocery flyers, slang ETC. After giving a little back story on me and mom English and Spanish. I will give a brief story about when my mom called me to read out something for her.

On a nice Saturday afternoon, I was lying in bed and from the corner of my ear I heard “MICHAEL VEN AQUI POR FAVOR”. Yes, mami I exclaimed. As I get out of bed put on my sandals and start walking, I see my mom reading something on her phone. She said “Michael can you read this you for me I don’t understand” as I understood what my mom had wanted me to do, I nodded and started reading out. As I was reading out, I was explaining what I was reading out to her. What I was reading was instructions on how to work the cleaning robot. As I was reading out how to connect and set up the robot. I explained the important details to my mom, like how to turn the robot on and how to make it start cleaning. My mom was never good with technology, so I had to always deal with the technical issues around the house, so this was simple. I gave my mom her phone back and she started up the robot by herself. As she did that I started walking back to my bedroom. But my mom’s voice stopped me in my tracks “donde vas” I immediately walked back to my mom faster than the flash fighting villains. My mom explained that I had more to read and explain. My mom’s tongue is as natural as it gets for me when she speaks Spanish so I immediately understand. What I had to read was instructions on how to put together and work the carpet cleaner. I read the instructions and explained to my mom that certain modes on the carpet cleaner may give different results when cleaning. So, after reading the instructions I assembled the machine and helped my mom clean the carpets.

In today’s society I have a better understanding of literature and language, and this connects because with my better understanding of today’s English and slang I’m able to aid and help my mom whenever she sees words and slang, she’s never heard or seen before. For example, I had to explain a couple of slang words to my mom before the words being lmao, lol, bread. So, with my better understanding of today’s society English and slang I was able to help my mom understand.
